Salpointe Catholic has gone 9-1 against Sahuaro recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Lancers will face off against the Cougars at 4:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Salpointe Catholic has eight straight wins, Sahuaro has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Salpointe Catholic is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Canyon del Oro, who was ranked 20th at the time (Salpointe Catholic was ranked fourth). The Lancers were the clear victors by a 10-0 margin over the Dorados on Friday. Considering the Lancers have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
The result came thanks to Ernesto Bojorquez's shutout, as he gave up just two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Salpointe Catholic got a massive performance out of Lucas Shannon, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. Paul Saffer was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.
Salpointe Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Canyon del Oro only posted a batting average of .105.
Meanwhile, Sahuaro fell victim to Catalina Foothills and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 11-0 to the Falcons.
Salpointe Catholic's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-0-1. The team's perfect season has a lot to do with their hitting performance: the team's won by an average of 6.8 runs thus far. As for Sahuaro, their loss dropped their record down to 2-12-1.
Sahuaro's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Salpointe Catholic has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .487. It's a different story for Sahuaro, though, as they've only averaged .354. Will they be able to contain Salpointe Catholic's hitters?
Salpointe Catholic came up short against Sahuaro when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 6-3. Can the Lancers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
