Basketball Game Preview: West Grand Mustangs vs. Vail Christian Saints

The West Grand Mustangs will take on the Vail Christian Saints at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in West Grand's favor as the team sits on seven straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Vail Christian has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road also dating back to last season.

West Grand is headed into the match after thoroughly thrashing Caprock Academy: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that West Grand blew Caprock Academy out of the water with a 54-15 final score. The Mustangs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight games by 23 points or more this season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead West Grand to victory, but perhaps none more so than Sara Lechman, who went 9 for 13 on her way to 18 points in addition to five rebounds and five steals. Lechman is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylin Harthun, who went 6 of 10 on her way to 14 points along with six boards and three steals.

West Grand smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Vail Christian came up short against Vail Mountain on Friday and fell 32-23.

West Grand's win ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 10-1. As for Vail Christian, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.

Everything came up roses for West Grand against Vail Christian when the teams last played back in February of 2024, as the squad secured a 61-7 victory. In that match, West Grand amassed a halftime lead of 34-4, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
