JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
First Coast (Jacksonville, Fla.) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as
Deandre Johnson threw a touchdown to
Tristan Payton with 10:00 left, bringing the team to victory over
Sandalwood (Jacksonville, Fla.) 40-21.
After nabbing the lead on a passing touchdown, the Saints went into halftime with a 19-14 lead. The Buccaneers scored the winning points with a touchdown pass by Johnson to Payton that came in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring six points in the third, First Coast still trailed by two points going into the fourth quarter. But 19 points in the fourth helped FC pull out the victory.
Jerald Washington stood out for the Buccaneers in the win. The junior wide receiver ran for one touchdown and caught one touchdown. He has now scored nine touchdowns on the season.
Led by
Kain Daub, Sandalwood came in allowing just 12.3 points per game this season. SHS struggled against First Coast's offense, which entered the game scoring 113.5 points per game.
The defeat comes as a step back for Sandalwood, who notched a 31-0 victory over Mandarin in its previous outing.
Sandalwood (7-2) will play a non-conference game against Parker next week, while First Coast (8-1) will take on White also in a non-conference game.
