Basketball Game Preview: Jay Mustangs vs. Southwest Dragons

Jay has gone 4-0 against Southwest recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Jay Mustangs will look to defend their home court against the Southwest Dragons at 8:00 p.m. Given that both suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.

Jay is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering McCollum just ended the team's seven-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 51-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cowboys. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 247th, while the Cowboys are ranked 98th).

Meanwhile, Southwest suffered their biggest defeat since November 26, 2024 on Friday. They had to suffer through a 74-38 loss at the hands of McCollum. The Dragons' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Despite the defeat, Southwest saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Genaya Santos went 6 for 8 from beyond the arc on her way to 20 points and five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Santos has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Paris Alaquinez, who posted eight points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, Southwest smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive matches.

Southwest's loss dropped their record down to 10-17. As for Jay, their defeat dropped their record down to 19-8.

Everything came up roses for Jay against Southwest in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, as the squad secured a 69-32 victory. Will Jay repeat their success, or does Southwest have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
