2A-1 Region IV District 14 recap Oct. 16, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Hempstead, who took down 241st ranked Hempstead, 49-35.
Rice Consolidated's James Garner rumbled for the longest rushing play in 2A-1 Region IV District 14 this season in his game against Industrial last week. Garner scampered for 60 yards on the play and finished with 164 on the day as his team bested the Cobras.
Rice Consolidated's dynamic duo of Jordan Johnson and Everitt Grounds proved tough for Industrial to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Johnson threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns and Grounds had 117 yards receiving. Noe Belmares helped Rice Consolidated's passing attack out by catching two balls for 33 yards.
Will Smith was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 15 carries, he ran for 181 yards as the Bobcats topped the Cobras. Desmond Jordan also contributed to the rushing game with 47 yards on the ground.
Hempstead's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Bobcats feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 636 yards and eight touchdowns this season, while Laquinton Sargent has 13 catches for 270 yards. Smith also leads the league in rushing with 539 yards.
A big matchup in 2A-1 Region IV District 14 this week will be when Palacios takes on Hempstead. At the moment, the Sharks are in second, while the Bobcats are in third.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Hallettsville takes on the Raiders. The Brahmas have allowed 90 points this season, while Rice Consolidated has given up 113. Hallettsville allowed 15 points last week as it beat Palacios.
Tommy Psencik's team extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Mike Treybig's team, 49-15. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Brahmas.
