For the first time this season, Newington will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will challenge the Rocky Hill Terriers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Friday, Newington beat New Britain 12-9. The win continues a trend for the Nor'easters in their matchups with the Golden Hurricanes: they've now won eight in a row.
Newington got a massive performance out of Maiya Simpson, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Ariana Elliott, who scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-2.
Meanwhile, Rocky Hill put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past East Catholic 19-7.
Mia Ferreira was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. Ferreira was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.
In other batting news, Samantha Kelly was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with four runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Lucy Criscuolo was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one triple.
Rocky Hill was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .483. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .444 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.
Newington's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Rocky Hill, their record now sits at 3-0.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Newington has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Rocky Hill struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 12 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Newington was able to grind out a solid win over Rocky Hill in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, winning 11-6. Will the Nor'easters repeat their success, or do the Terriers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
