Football Recap: Elgin Skates Past Crockett with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Elgin). They simply couldn't be stopped on Thursday as they easily beat the Crockett Cougars 70-26. The Wildcats not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since November 8, 2024 (when they won 55-7).

Elgin's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jeremiah Nicholson led the charge by rushing for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 11.8 yards per carry. Nicholson showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 65 yards. Michael Mejias was in the mix as well, providing Elgin with three TDs.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Elgin was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 466 rushing yards. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 83.8 rushing yards per game earlier this season, but in their last five games they've averaged 268.

Crockett's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Roger Chargois, who rushed for 96 yards and two scores on only eight carries. Chargois also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making five total tackles and defending one pass. Another player making a difference was Peter Cobos, who rushed for 160 yards while picking up 9.4 yards per carry.

Elgin's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-6. As for Crockett, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 1-6.

Elgin and Crockett could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. The Wildcats (ranked 802nd) will meet Bastrop (ranked 202nd) at 7:30 p.m. on the 24th. Meanwhile, Crockett will take on Pflugerville at 7:30 p.m. on the 24th with a big rank disadvantage (1034 vs. 368).
