Baseball Recap: Salem Hills Gets the Win

While Salem Hills's win against Cedar Valley wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Skyhawks won by a run and slipped past the Aviators 8-7. The Skyhawks haven't had any issues with the Aviators recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Braxton Harrison made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Salem Hills is 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 3-9 otherwise. Harrison was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

In other pitching news, Salem Hills got a great performance from Peyton Higginson as he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Those seven strikeouts gave Higginson a new career-high.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Kaleb DeGraffenried, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Salem Hills' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-11 when he doesn't). Guss Johnson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.

Salem Hills was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .458. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Salem Hills' win bumped their record up to 7-11. As for Cedar Valley, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 14 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season.

Salem Hills will square off against West Field at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Skyhawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Longhorns have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. Cedar Valley will be paying especially close attention to Salem Hills' contest: after Salem Hills faces off against West Field, they'll take on Cedar Valley again at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
