2A Region 4 recap November 5, 2013
Braxton Smith and Joel Murdock provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Decatur. The longest such play in 2A Region 4 this season, the connection resulted in 66 yards.
Western Yell County was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from ninth to seventh in the league. Earlier in the week, the Wolverines defeated Hartford 59-12.
Union Christian Academy's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Smith threw for 344 and 4 touchdowns and Murdock had 185 yards receiving. On the ground Matt Hoelzeman contributed 78 yards. Will Callaway helped Union Christian Academy's passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 90 yards.
He was 19-31 with 1 interception.
Bobby Gatewood was a key player and the best on defense this week as Mountainburg fell to Leftwich. The 5-foot-10 sophomore grabbed 1 sacks.
Murdock was the best wideout in the league this week as the Eagles bested the Bulldogs. Murdock racked up 8 receptions for 185 yards. Callaway helped Union Christian Academy's passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 90 yards.
Union Christian Academy's Smith and Callaway led 2A Region 4 in both passing and receiving yards. 6-5 quarterback Smith has thrown for 2,136 yards this season, while Callaway has 51 catches for 694 yards. Gus Nichols from Hector leads the league in rushing with 954 yards.
Nichols of the the Wildcats is only 46 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 115 carries Nichols has put up 954 yards this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Hector takes on the Rebels. At the moment, Mark Taylor's team is in first, while West Side is in sixth.
The Rattlers and the Dragons played the closest game in the league this week, with the Rattlers eventually emerging with a 28-25 victory.
