AAAA Region II recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Wade Hampton, who took down 84th ranked Wade Hampton, 64-37.
Byrnes extended the longest winning streak in AAAA Region II this week by beating Boiling Springs, 35-7. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Byrnes' dynamic duo of Shuler Bentley and Evan Sudduth proved tough for the Bulldogs to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Bentley threw for 435 yards and five touchdowns and Sudduth had 141 yards receiving. Shaedon Meadors helped Byrnes' passing attack out by catching four balls for 129 yards.
Hyleck Foster was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 63 yards as Gaffney bested Boiling Springs. Teammate JoJo McGill added to the ground attack by rushing for 56 yards.
The Rebels' Bentley and Akia Booker have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Bentley has thrown for 1936 yards this season, while Booker, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 36 catches for 624 yards. Foster from the Indians leads the league in rushing with 422 yards.
Byrnes' Bentley is within 64 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Spartanburg.
A big matchup in AAAA Region II this week will be when the Generals take on Gaffney. As it stands, Wade Hampton is in second, while Dan Jones's team is in fourth.
Mauldin was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to third in the league. The Mavericks beat Kent Haltiwanger's team 64-37 earlier in the week.
