Desert View and Rincon/University are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Desert View Jaguars will head out to take on the Rincon/University Rangers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Desert View has given up an average of 8.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Desert View will head out to face Rincon/University after giving up their first home loss of the season on Monday. Desert View lost 13-1 to Tucson High Magnet School. The Jaguars just can't catch a break and have now endured four defeats in a row.
Desert View saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Leia Switzer, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Rincon/University). They put the hurt on South Mountain with a sharp 14-1 win on Monday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Rangers with their most commanding win of the season.
Marciella Castillo made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Castillo was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Rincon/University got a massive performance out of Sophia Castillo, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Bella Gyuro, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Rincon/University always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .559. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Mountain only posted an OBP of .167.
The victory made it two in a row for Rincon/University and bumps their season record up to 3-5. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to strikeouts: they averaged an imposing 7.5 strikeouts in those games compared to only 2.33 in the others. As for Desert View, the loss was their first at home , dropping their record down to 3-5.
Desert View took their win against Rincon/University in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Desert View since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
