It was a good run, but The Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Friday. They had to suffer through a rough 49-20 loss at the hands of Pima. Santa Cruz Valley was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Pima apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2017.
Several Dust Devils players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nathan Harris, who threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns while completing 75.9% of his passes. The team also got some help courtesy of ShonLuis Banda, who picked up 81 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Pima can attribute much of their success to Jeremiah Martinez , who rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries. Martinez was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 53 yards. Tuddy Smart made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Another reason for the win was Pima's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for 5.5 sacks. Santa Cruz Valley's QB won't forget Preston Russell anytime soon given Russell sacked him six times.
Santa Cruz Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Pima, their victory was their 14th straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 10-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Santa Cruz Valley will take on Tombstone at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Tombstone's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last four matches. As for Pima, they will be playing at home against Holbrook at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Holbrook is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
