The Lugoff-Elgin Demons's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their 12th straight loss. They were beaten by Trinity Collegiate 84-51. While losing is never fun, Lugoff-Elgin can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 158th, while Trinity Collegiate is ranked 22nd).
Despite the loss, Lugoff-Elgin saw an underclassman step up: Jillian Rush scored 26 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Rush has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Alicia Jefferson, who scored six points.
Trinity Collegiate's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Makayla Legette led the charge by scoring 21 points along with eight assists and eight steals. Legette is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. Kaliya Herman was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with three steals.
Lugoff-Elgin's loss was their fifth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-14. As for Trinity Collegiate, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 15-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lugoff-Elgin won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Westwood at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th. Westwood is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 50 points per game. Trinity Collegiate won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against First Baptist School at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th.
