Lakeshore was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Niles 37-21. The Lancers came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 39 last week.
Mattawan extended the longest winning streak in Southwestern Michigan - West this week by beating Kalamazoo Central, 45-21. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
St. Joseph's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. James Morris threw for 124 and one touchdown and Mason Shinrock had 86 yards receiving. On the ground Alex Rutherford chipped in 178 yards. Terrill Wilburn helped St. Joseph's passing attack out by catching one ball for 26 yards.
Lakeshore's JOHNNY NATE and HAROLD WIGGINS have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. NATE has thrown for 740 yards this season, while WIGGINS, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 25 catches for 344 yards. Trevor Sweeney from Mattawan leads the league in rushing with 728 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Bears take on Matt Stephens's team. As it stands, St. Joseph is in fifth, while the Wildcats are in first.
Portage Northern was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in Southwestern Michigan - West. The Huskies beat Benton Harbor 48-0 earlier in the week.
