Benton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Greg Chambers, who rushed for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also picked up 56 receiving yards. The Tigers are 2-1 when Chambers posts 80 or more rushing yards, but 0-3 otherwise. Another receiver making a difference was Case Austin, who picked up 111 receiving yards and two TDs.
Another reason for the win was Benton's imposing defensive line, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Beckett Moore was especially locked on to Haughton's QB and sacked him twice. Benton got some further help from Xavier Villamor: he picked up a sack and made ten total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Evangel Christian Academy). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Captain Shreve 71-25. The Eagles pushed the score to 63-19 by the end of the third, a deficit the Gators had no chance of recovering from.
Benton better focus on containing Charley Abraham and Kionte' Mims Ii as the pair were huge in Evangel Christian Academy's win. Abraham picked up 83 receiving yards and a pair of scores, while Mims Ii rushed for 92 yards and one touchdown on only ten carries. Those 92 rushing yards gave Mims Ii a new career-high.
Evangel Christian Academy's win bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Benton, their victory bumped their record up to 2-4.
The upcoming game will be a clash of competing strengths. Benton has relied on air attacks this season and has averaged 278.8 passing yards per game. Evangel Christian Academy, on the other hand, has relied on a stout run game: they average 241.5 rushing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Thursday? There's only one way to find out.
Benton and Evangel Christian Academy were almost perfectly matched up in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, but Benton suffered an agonizing 34-33 loss.
