The Vanguard Knights will head out on the road to face off against the South Sumter Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
A well-balanced attack led Vanguard over North Marion in every quarter on their way to victory two weeks ago. Vanguard beat North Marion by the very same score they won with last week: 47-0. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Vanguard had established a 40 point advantage.
Fred Gaskin got back to being his usual excellent self, as he rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries, and also threw for 112 yards and a touchdown on only seven passes. Mitchell Brown was another key contributor, rushing for 81 yards and a touchdown on only five carries.
Meanwhile, South Sumter had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Hernando 63-6 on the road. The result was nothing new for South Sumter, who have now won four matches by 21 points or more so far this season.
South Sumter found their leader in underclassman Landen Sherman, who threw for 161 yards and four touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Ja?kyrian Turner got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Vanguard has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in six of their first seven matches, giving them a 6-1 record. As for South Sumter, their victory was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 7-1.
