Tomales got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Wyatt Cornett out in front who posted 15 points and seven boards. The contest was Cornett's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Erick Dominguez was another key player, putting up 12 points.
Meanwhile, Point Arena entered their game against Novato on Saturday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. Point Arena took a 49-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of Novato. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Pirates came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 369th, while the Hornets are ranked 801st).
Tomales will have to contain Fernando Lopez as he made an impact in Point Arena's last game. He dropped a double-double on 28 points and ten rebounds. Lopez is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down ten or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tosh Mouton, who put up eight points and nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, Point Arena smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 16 offensive rebounds in 39 consecutive contests dating back to last season.
Tomales' victory bumped their record up to 3-4. As for Point Arena, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-3.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Tomales has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 35.3 boards per game. However, it's not like Point Arena struggles in that department as they've been averaging 47.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Tomales was taken down by Point Arena 72-25 in their previous matchup back in December of 2022. Thankfully for Tomales, Derek Billy (who went 10 of 17 on his way to 21 points along with six rebounds and three steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
