Miami is on a ten-game streak of home losses dating back to last season, and Pima a three-game streak of away losses. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Friday. The Miami Vandals will host the Pima Roughriders at 4:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Having struggled with 11 losses in a row, Miami turned things around against Ray on Tuesday. They skirted past the Bearcats 13-11. The Vandals' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Ethan Guthrey made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed seven innings while giving up four earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cooper Gore, who scored three runs while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two). Nathan Madrid was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in five of his six plate appearances.
Miami always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Pima sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-7 win over Gilbert Classical Academy on Wednesday.
Preston Russell was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Aiden Alder, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.
Miami's victory bumped their record up to 2-13. As for Pima, their win bumped their record up to 5-7-1.
Miami might still be hurting after the 11-0 defeat they got from Pima in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will the Vandals have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
