Slinger and Homestead are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Owls will square off against the Highlanders at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Slinger is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Slinger is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Wisconsin's top teams: Whitefish Bay, who was ranked seventh at the time (Slinger was ranked sixth). The Owls fell just short of the Blue Dukes by a score of 9-8 on Tuesday. The Owls' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Kaleb Burkel was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs. Another player making a difference was Cooper Williams, who went 3-for-5 with two runs.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Homestead nor Pius XI Catholic made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Highlanders sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over the Popes. The Highlanders haven't had any issues with the Popes recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Homestead also got a great performance from Sean Lemke as he struck out nine batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Those nine strikeouts gave Lemke a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Gavin Levin was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted over his last 11 games. Joe Simon also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Slinger's loss dropped their record down to 13-3. As for Homestead, the win was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 5-14.
Slinger's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's match. The Owls have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Homestead, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Slinger continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Slinger's way against Homestead in their previous meeting back in April, as Slinger made off with an 11-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Owls since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
