Mayfield is 2-8 against Providence since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Cubs are taking a road trip to face off against the Pioneers at 3:15 p.m. Mayfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Mayfield is headed into Tuesday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Thursday. They took an 11-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of Flintridge Prep.
Jaz Johnson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Sarah Salazar, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Providence waltzed into their game on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They were the clear victors by a 23-3 margin over the Dolphins. That 20 run margin sets a new team best for the Pioneers this season.
Madelynn Watts made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Watts was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That stolen base marked the first that she has snagged this season.
In other batting news, Providence got a massive performance out of Delailah Lopez, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and four RBI. Gloria Galindo was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBI, and one double.
Providence kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive contests.
Providence's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-3. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mayfield, they now have a losing record of 7-8-2.
Tuesday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mayfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .314. However, it's not like Providence struggles in that department as they've averaged .503. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mayfield skirted past Providence 2-0 when the teams last played two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cubs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
