After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Gilbert, the Catalina Foothills Falcons were happy to have found some success on Saturday. They took down Buckeye 56-38.
Catalina Foothills was led to victory by Clara-Mae Hrouch and Kayanna Chief. Hrouch scored 23 points along with six rebounds and three steals, while Chief dropped a double-double on 22 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it 13 consecutive games in which Hrouch has scored at least 25% of Catalina Foothills' points. Another player making a difference was Alessandra Egginton, who scored four points.
Buckeye lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Amayah Leyva, who scored 26 points along with six rebounds. Leyva is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kiria Avila escarcega, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Catalina Foothills has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 8-8 record this season. As for Buckeye, their loss dropped their record down to 7-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Catalina Foothills will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Salpointe Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Salpointe Catholic presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Catalina Foothills in Arizona (Salpointe Catholic is ranked fifth, while Catalina Foothills is ranked 89th). Buckeye will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Kofa at 7:00 p.m. on January 4th. Hopefully Kofa focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 two weeks ago.
