Softball Game Preview: St. David Tigers vs. Fort Thomas Apaches

The St. David Tigers will venture away from home to take on the Fort Thomas Apaches at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (St. David has five straight victories, Fort Thomas has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Last Thursday, St. David made easy work of Duncan and carried off a 24-4 win. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won eight matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Paisley Gooding spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on six hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, St. David got a massive performance out of Emelynn Jacquez, who fired off two home runs, eight RBI, and one double while going 5-for-6. Those eight RBI gave Jacquez a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Hart, who scored five runs and stole a base while going 3-for-5.

Jacquez wasn't the only one working in the home run department: St. David lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Fort Thomas came up short against Superior on Friday, falling 18-1.

St. David pushed their record up to 10-3 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 22.0 runs over those games. As for Fort Thomas, their loss dropped their record down to 5-10.

Everything went St. David's way against Fort Thomas when the teams last played back in March, as St. David made off with an 18-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
