Game of Inches
Though not as conclusive as the rankings might have led one to believe, Red Bank Catholic's matchup last week went as planned. It won a game that couldn't get any closer, slipping by Rumson-Fair Haven 14 - 13. The outcome was a definite jolt of excitement for Red Bank Catholic after its previous game, where the margin was anything but close. The one-point margin earned this game the title of 'most exciting' for the week.
Movin on Up
Long Branch managed to bank 272 more yards than its opponent Manalapan last week, and going the extra distance paid off. Long Branch didn't allow a single point to Manalapan and won 34 - 0. No one had a larger role in the success than junior Jermaine Corbett, who brought his A game into the contest. He rushed for 321 yards and two touchdowns. Long Branch's success was rewarded with a 13-spot boost in the power rankings, the biggest improvement of any team.
No Stoppin 'Em
The match between Don Bosco Prep and DePaul Catholic last week put some strain on the scoreboard; in fact, with a total of 87 final points, it was the highest scoring contest in the power rankings for the week. DePaul Catholic has to be hurting after a devastating 59 - 28 defeat at the hands of Don Bosco Prep. The team got a solid performance out of senior Taquan Roberson (he threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns); unfortunately, it just wasn't enough for the win.
Next Week's Big Game
The big showdown in the power rankings this week is between St. Joseph Regional (3rd in the power rankings) and St. Peter's Prep (2nd). The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games. St. Peter's Prep and St. Joseph Regional both have plenty of landslide victories under their belts (St. Peter's Prep with five and St. Joseph Regional with four), but only one can come away triumphant this week. We'll find out who that is soon.
