St. Marys and DuBois Central Catholic are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Flying Dutch will take on the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. St. Marys is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
On Friday, it was close, but St. Marys sidestepped DuBois for a 5-3 victory.
Avery Eckels made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one double.
Eckels wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kaylen Eozzo, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
DuBois Central Catholic never got on the board in their matchup last Thursday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Elk County Catholic on Wednesday. They never let the Crusaders get on the board and left with an 18-0 win. Considering the Cardinals have won four contests by more than ten runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Like St. Marys, DuBois Central Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Rylee Kulbatsky. She struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Kulbatsky was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one double. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, DuBois Central Catholic got a massive performance out of Marina Hanes, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those three stolen bases gave Hanes a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Lily Sachs, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
DuBois Central Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .750. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
DuBois Central Catholic has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for St. Marys, their record now sits at 9-1.
St. Marys' speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's game. The Flying Dutch have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for DuBois Central Catholic, though, as they've been averaging only 1.4 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will St. Marys continue to outrun the ball?
St. Marys was able to grind out a solid win over DuBois Central Catholic in their previous meeting last Thursday, winning 5-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Flying Dutch since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
