The Towanda Black Knights will square off against the Hughesville Spartans at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.
Towanda proved they can win big last Thursday (they won by ten) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Williamson 4-2.
Aleah Johnson made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, Brooklyn Evans was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Hughesville got the win against Wellsboro on Wednesday by a conclusive 12-2. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven contests by six runs or more this season.
Ella Breneisen spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Maddie Smith, who went 3-for-4 with six stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI. Those six stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brynlee Williams, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Hughesville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .323 or higher in six consecutive games.
Hughesville's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Towanda, their record is now 9-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Towanda has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Hughesville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
