The KIPP P Pride had to start their season on the road on Friday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They had to suffer through a rough 70-23 loss at the hands of Weldon. KIPP P lost against Weldon in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 45-37 score last time.
Despite the loss, KIPP P saw an underclassman step up: Kaiyah Cherry scored 7 points along with 22 rebounds.
Weldon can attribute much of their success to Shaelyn Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Briana Moody, who scored 18 points.
KIPP P's defeat dropped their record down to 0-1. As for Weldon, their win bumped their record up to 1-0.
KIPP P will be playing in front of their home fans against Warren County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Weldon, they will head out on the road to face off against North Edgecombe at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
