The Poquoson Islanders's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their ninth straight defeat. They took a 57-39 bruising from Lafayette. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Poquoson in their matchups with Lafayette: they've now lost six in a row.
Despite the loss, Poquoson still got an impressive performance from Khaleo Smith, who scored 19 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Daniel Sperling, who scored two points along with ten rebounds.
Lafayette's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jarquez Garrett, who scored 17 points along with three steals. Garrett is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last 16 games he's played. Wayne Santos Jr was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with two steals.
Poquoson dropped their record down to 1-16 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home. As for Lafayette, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 15-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Poquoson will face off against Arcadia at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Arcadia knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 12 games -- so hopefully Poquoson likes a good challenge. Lafayette's road trip will continue as they head out to face York at 7:00 p.m. on February 5th. Lafayette is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 64.5 points per game this season.
