The Dexter Bearcats had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They escaped with a win on Monday against Saxony Lutheran by the margin of a single free throw, 47-46. This was payback for Dexter, who suffered a 38-34 loss the last time these two teams met.
Saxony Lutheran's loss came despite strong showings from Evie Caruso and Abigail Haley. Caruso dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Haley scored 15 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Haley scored a full 32.6% of Saxony Lutheran's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Timora Criddle, who scored 9 points.
Dexter's win bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Saxony Lutheran, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Dexter will take on New Madrid County Central at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Saxony Lutheran, they will stay at home for another game and welcome St. Vincent at 7:30 p.m. on December 4th.
