The Anselmo-Merna Coyotes will head out on the road to take on the Burwell Longhorns on Friday. Anselmo-Merna will be strutting in after a win while Burwell will be coming in after a defeat.
Anselmo-Merna took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They took their game with ease, bagging a 64-16 victory over Chambers/Wheeler Central. That looming 64-16 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Coyotes yet this season.
Dane Duryea was his usual excellent self, rushing for 125 yards and five scores. Timmy Myers made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Anselmo-Merna didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Duryea, Caenyn Priest, and Myers picked up one apiece. Myers got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Burwell fell victim to Central Valley and their airtight defense on Friday. They were outmatched by the Cougars and fell 46-0. The Longhorns have struggled against the Cougars recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Anselmo-Merna pushed their record up to 4-1 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 49.3 points over those games. As for Burwell, their loss dropped their record down to 3-2.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Anselmo-Merna has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 215 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Burwell struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 275.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Anselmo-Merna didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Burwell in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, but they still walked away with a 28-24 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Coyotes since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
