Gilroy is 7-1 against Santa Teresa since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Mustangs will venture away from home to take on the Saints at 4:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Gilroy has four straight victories, Santa Teresa has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Tuesday, Gilroy earned a 10-5 win over Ann Sobrato. That's two games straight that the Mustangs have won by exactly five runs.
Ariela Yslava made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.
In other batting news, Andrea Alvarez was excellent, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Averi Peters also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Gilroy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ann Sobrato only managed ten hits.
Meanwhile, Santa Teresa lost 9-3 to Willow Glen on Tuesday.
Samantha Vidal was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Gilroy's victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 16-6. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for Santa Teresa, their loss dropped their record down to 6-16.
Santa Teresa's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Gilroy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Santa Teresa, though, as they've been averaging only 2.8 strikeouts. Will Gilroy keep running through batters, or will the Saints buck the trend?
Gilroy came out on top in a nail-biter against Santa Teresa in their previous meeting two weeks ago, sneaking past 3-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
