The Weir Red Riders lost against the Steubenville Big Red back in December of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. Weir received a tough blow as they fell 66-52 to Steubenville. Weir has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
When it comes to explaining why Weir lost, one person who can't be blamed is Colin Cross. Despite the final result, he scored 24 points along with nine rebounds. That's the first time this season that Cross pulled down eight or more rebounds. Malachi Stromile was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Steubenville's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Santino Haney, who scored 23 points along with five assists and five rebounds. Haney is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Keith Lewis, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Weir has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-8 record this season. As for Steubenville, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Weir will be playing at home against North Marion at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. North Marion presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Weir in West Virginia (North Marion is ranked 54th, while Weir is ranked 538th). Steubenville will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Carrollton at 6:45 p.m. on January 16th. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Lincoln Mallarnee and Haney.
