Calvert Hall’s 17-2 victory over Mount St. Joseph in each team’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association ‘A’ Conference boys' lacrosse opener might have been impressive, but it was also costly, as the Cardinals lost junior midfielder David Kelly for the season.
Kelly, who will play at Rutgers next year, broke his arm when he collided with another player during the win.
Jason McFadden scored four goals to lead Calvert Hall’s well-balanced offensive attack. Patrick Fansh added two goals and two assists, and Tony Rossi dished out two assists for the Cardinals.
Defensively, Greg Dutton had nine saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Johns Hopkins-bound defenseman Chris Lightener shut out the Gaels’ offensive star, Chris Costabile.
Calvert Hall, which improved to 4-1 overall and is currently ranked No. 1 by LaxPower.com, will take on Boys Latin (7-0) on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Mount St. Joseph fell to 3-2 and will travel to play Gilman, ranked No. 4 in the country by LaxPower.com, on Tuesday afternoon at 4:15 p.m.
St. Paul’s hands McDonogh first loss
Jeff Fountain scored the game-tying goal with four minutes left in the game and then assisted on the game-winner when he found Pat Powderly in front of the net during a late fourth-quarter power play to lead St. Paul’s to an 8-7 victory over previously undefeated McDonogh in an MIAA ‘A’ Conference game on Friday night.
Fountain finished with one goal and two assists, Powderly had one of each, and Alex Chay had a hat trick for St. Paul’s.
Patrick Toohey had two goals and an assist for McDonogh, while Kyle Rice and Robbie Owen each chipped in with two goals.
“We plan to be a contender this year,” St. Paul’s coach Rick Brocato said. “That is our goal. We hope we can be very competitive this spring in the top league in the country.”
St. Paul’s (6-1 overall, 1-0 conference) will travel to Loyola Blakefield (4-2) for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday.
McDonogh (7-1, 0-1) will look to rebound when it plays at Friends (3-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Gilman thwarts St. Mary’s comeback
Gilman entered Friday night’s MIAA ‘A’ Conference opener against St. Mary’s as the No. 1 team in the country in several polls, and the Greyhounds’ early offensive outburst and hard-hitting defense gave every indication that the visitors would easily handle their hosts.
But St. Mary’s refused to roll over without a fight, staging a remarkable five-goal fourth-quarter comeback before finally falling to their conference rival, 12-11.
”Our team has great character,” St. Mary’s coach Matt Hogan said after watching his team’s rally fall just short. “We knew that right away due to the leadership of the team.”
St. Mary’s, currently ranked No. 2 by LaxPower.com, fired nine shots on goal in the first quarter, but Gilman goalie Conor McGee was flawless, enabling the Greyhounds to jump out to an early 2-0 lead on two Marcus Holman goals.
Holman and Davey Emala each finished with three goals for Gilman, which entered the fourth quarter with a 10-5 lead before St. Mary’s mounted its comeback.
J. P. Coombe led St. Mary’s with four goals, including two during the late rally when the Saints pulled to within one with just over four minutes remaining. Emala then scored his third goal to put the game out of reach for Gilman.
The game statistics were as close as the final score with each team winning 24 faceoffs, and St. Mary’s holding the edge in ground balls (39-37) and shots on goal (38-30).
Despite the loss, Hogan was pleased with his players’ effort and is confident in his team’s chances as it begins a very rigorous conference schedule.
“The players are giving great effort and I love that about this team,” Hogan said. “We must remember and repeat the amount of energy, passion and effort we gave against Gilman for the remainder of the season. If we can do that, we will be successful."
Gilman (4-0) will host Mount St. Joseph (3-2) on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.
St. Mary’s (6-1) will look to rebound when it travels to Archbishop Spalding (4-2) for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday.
Notre Dame girls topple Archbishop Spalding
Notre Dame used a late four-goal rally to defeat Archbishop Spalding, 16-13, in a Friday night Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland ‘A’ Conference lacrosse game.
After Spalding’s Danielle Kirk (4 goals) tied the game at 10 early in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame’s Erin Laschinger (7 goals) strung together three straight goals and Katie Liberatore (5 goals) added a fourth with just over 10 minutes to play to put the game away for good for the Blazers.
Covey Stanwick dished out seven assists for Notre Dame.
In addition to Kirk’s four goals, Courtney Hoyes scored five for the Cavaliers.
Notre Dame (4-0, 4-0) will host Maryvale Prep (5-2, 4-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
After being rained out on Friday against McDonogh, Archibishop Spalding (7-1, 3-1) will host Garrison Forest (2-2, 1-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
