Southwest is 2-7 against Axtell since February of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Southwest Roughriders will head out on the road to take on the Axtell Wildcats. Southwest is looking to tack on another W to their four-game streak on the road.
In what's become a running theme this season, Southwest gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. They blew past Wallace 62-27 on the road. Given Southwest's advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 95th, while Wallace is ranked 203rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Southwest found their leader in underclassman Anikka Nelms, who scored 19 points along with three steals. It was the first time this season that Nelms scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Allison Vanpelt, who scored nine points along with five assists and four steals.
Meanwhile, Axtell scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They snuck past Loomis with a 52-48 victory. The win was a breath of fresh air for Axtell as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Southwest has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. As for Axtell, their win bumped their record up to 3-17.
Everything came up roses for Southwest against Axtell in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 as the squad secured a 50-19 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Southwest since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
