The Ashe County Huskies lost against the Watauga Pioneers back in October of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Ashe County was dealt a 63-27 loss at the hands of Watauga. While losing is never fun, Ashe County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 184th, while Watauga is ranked 34th).
Ashe County's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Blake Peters, who threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns. Bridger Fairchild also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Maddox Greene was his usual excellent self, rushing for 189 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries, while also throwing for 221 yards and three touchdowns while completing 100% of his passes. Greene is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last three games he's played. Matthew Leon was another major influence, as he rushed for 101 yards and ran in a TD.
Ashe County's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their overall record down to 6-4. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 10-0 Mount Airy (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 70% over those games). As for Watauga, the victory for they keeps them at an undefeated 10-0.
Ashe County does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Watauga will be playing at home against Hickory at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hickory is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
