The Mount Mercy Academy Magic will challenge the Nichols Vikings at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Mount Mercy Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
Mount Mercy Academy easily dispatched Nichols last Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Magic fell just short of Sacred Heart Academy by a score of 6-4 on Monday. The contest marked the Magic's lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Taylor Jahn spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up 15 Ks.
At the plate, Mount Mercy Academy saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Riley Coughlin, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Nichols had taken Mount Mercy Academy down for three straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end last Tuesday. The Vikings came up short against the Magic, falling 12-6.
Nichols also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Reyes Rodriguez gave up only one earned (and 11 unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up eight Ks. Those eight strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Rodriguez.
On the hitting side, Ellery Jaworowicz made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Brynn Bacak, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Nichols' loss dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Mount Mercy Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-2.
Nichols' hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Mount Mercy Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.4 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Nichols, though, as they've been averaging only 3.6 strikeouts. Will Mount Mercy Academy keep running through batters, or will the Vikings buck the trend?
