I-70 recap Oct. 9, 2012
Lane Barker of Orrick ran for the longest rushing play in I-70 this season against Santa Fe last week. Barker's team fell to the Chiefs as he sprinted for 65 yards on the play and finished with 98 in all.
Wellington-Napoleon extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating St. Paul Lutheran, 36-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Tigers.
Nathan Vogelsmeier was the best wideout in the league this week as Sweet Springs lost to Crest Ridge. Vogelsmeier racked up five receptions for 37 yards. Jeffery Hall helped Sweet Springs' passing attack out by catching two balls for 34 yards.
Ethan Matthews put up the best numbers through the air as the Cougars bested the Greyhounds. He finished with eight completions for 70 yards and three touchdowns. Matthews' favorite target this week was Noah McCune, who caught three passes for 28 yards.
Derrick Dennis was the most productive running back in I-70 this week. In 33 carries, he ran for 200 yards as Orrick lost to Crest Ridge. Wyatt Nail also contributed to the rushing game with 104 yards on the ground.
6-foot-0 quarterback Matthews of Chris Cavanah's team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 561. He has also thrown five touchdowns. On the ground, Scott Finley's team's Dennis has rushed for 939 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Hall. The Sweet Springs star has 13 catches for 287 yards.
Dennis of the the Bearcats is only 61 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Santa Fe takes on the Saints. Andy Frerking's team is in third place, while St. Paul Lutheran is in second place.
Quenton Bainbridge's team made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,989 from 5,576. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 36-14 victory over Larry Laubenstein's team last week.
