Softball Recap: Southwestern's Win on Thursday Extends Winning Streak to Five

Southwestern proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 15) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Quincy Notre Dame Raiders 9-7. The win was familiar territory for the Piasa Birds, who have now won five matchups in a row.

The team relied heavily on Vivian Zurheide, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Fenstermaker, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Southwestern kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in seven consecutive contests.

Southwestern's record is now 7-3-1. As for Quincy Notre Dame, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 15-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southwestern will face off against Litchfield at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Piasa Birds are facing the Purple Panthers at the right time seeing as the Purple Panthers are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Quincy Notre Dame, they will square off against Carrollton at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
