Football Recap: Whiting Comes Up Short

After flying high against Calumet Christian last Friday, Whiting came back down to earth. The Oilers fell 36-28 to the Lake Station Edison Fighting Eagles on Friday. The Oilers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Fighting Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in October of 2023.

Despite the loss, Whiting still got an impressive performance from Demetrio Lopez, who rushed for 126 yards and three scores on only 13 carries. Lopez got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 71 yards. Berner Garcia also helped out with an impressive 104 receiving yards.

David Parker produced another solid performance rushing for 178 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 11.1 yards per carry, and also throwing for 66 yards and three touchdowns on only five passes for Lake Station Edison. With that strong performance, Parker is now averaging an impressive 115 rushing yards per game. Lake Station Edison's leading receiver Harry Vargas was Parker's top target yet again, picking up 55 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Whiting now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Lake Station Edison, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.

Coming up, Whiting will head out to square off against Calumet New Tech at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That match will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Lopez and Bryce Brandon. As for Lake Station Edison, they will be playing at home against Hammond Bishop Noll at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
