Brownwood is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. They will look to defend their home field against the Lampasas Badgers at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Brownwood put up the most points they have all season on Friday. They blew past Ingleside 62-0. Given the Lions' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 285th, while the Mustangs are ranked 1051st) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Lampasas strolled into their game on Thursday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They came out on top against Lorena by a score of 42-35. That's two games straight that the Badgers have won by exactly seven points.
Lampasas' win came from a few key players Brownwood will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was KJ Reed, who rushed for 134 yards on only 12 carries. His longest rush was for an impressive 57 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Wesley Stephens was another key player, rushing for 140 yards on only 13 carries.
Lampasas was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 299 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 299 rushing yards in three consecutive matchups.
Lampasas didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Coulter Sellers, Trent Rogers, and Tate Langford picked up one apiece. With that strong performance, Sellers is now averaging an impressive 5.6 total tackles per game. Another thorn in Lorena's side was Campbell Roberts, who picked up three sacks, forced one fumble, and made eight total tackles (4.0 for loss).
The win got Brownwood back to even at 3-3. As for Lampasas, their victory bumped their record up to 6-0.
Brownwood came up short against Lampasas in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 30-20. Thankfully for the Lions, Reed Jerome (who rushed for 55 yards and one TD, and also threw for 175 yards and one touchdown while completing 83.3% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
