Whitmer has gone a perfect 3-0 against Springfield recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Panthers will square off against the Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. Whitmer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Whitmer took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They put the hurt on Emmanuel Christian with a sharp 23-0 win. The high-scoring effort was just what the Panthers needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Collin Lawerence and Anthony Leroux made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Lawerence tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Leroux pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. What's more, Lawerence posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April. At the plate, Lawerence went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI, while Leroux went 3-for-4 with one home run, seven RBI, and four runs. That home run was Leroux's first of the season.
In other batting news, Nathan Sobecki was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Colsen Nichols, who went 4-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Whitmer always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .690. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Springfield had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-8 victory over the Bulldogs.
Brady Ruckman was incredible, going 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Springfield is undefeated when Ruckman posts two or more runs, but 1-9 otherwise. McCauley White was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.
Whitmer's record now sits at 8-4. As for Springfield, their record is now 5-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Whitmer has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Springfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Whitmer's way against Springfield in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Whitmer made off with an 11-3 win. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Blue Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
