The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Mavericks considering their two-run performance the match before.
Peyton Gardinier made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Gardinier was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cameron Crislip, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Baylee Ridgeway, who scored a run and stole a base.
Meanwhile, Woodrow Wilson scored the most runs they've had this season on Saturday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of Riverside by a score of 12-10. The Flying Eagles just can't catch a break and have now endured four defeats in a row.
Like James Monroe, Woodrow Wilson also got a great game from a two-way player: Maddex Sims. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off one hit. Sims was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while going 4-for-4. He also hit two doubles, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, Tyler Wilhite made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Brady Williams was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Even though they lost, Woodrow Wilson kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.
Woodrow Wilson's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for James Monroe, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
James Monroe couldn't quite get it done against Woodrow Wilson in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 7-2. Can James Monroe avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
