Basketball Game Preview: Madison Warhawks vs. Coronado Islanders

Madison and Coronado are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2016, but not for long. The Madison Warhawks will venture away from home to square off against the Coronado Islanders at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Madison is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.6 points per game this season.

Madison took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They strolled past Mira Mesa with points to spare, taking the game 76-62. The Warhawks pushed the score to 60-34 by the end of the third, a deficit the Marauders cut but never quite recovered from.

Madison's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Runnar(Rj) Miller, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 14 boards. That's the most points Miller has posted since back in December of 2024. Jorge Luque was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, Coronado was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 67-63 to Point Loma. While losing is never fun, the Islanders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 617th, while the Pointers are ranked 293rd).

Madison has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season. As for Coronado, they dropped their record down to 10-14 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road.

Madison beat Coronado 62-54 in their previous meeting back in January. The rematch might be a little tougher for Madison since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
