Basketball Recap: Sylmar Takes a Loss

Sylmar was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss dating back to last season. They fell 72-65 to the San Fernando Tigers. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January.

Despite the loss, Sylmar saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Andrew Galvez went 9 of 21 on his way to 28 points and seven rebounds. Galvez is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jordan Welton, who posted 11 points in addition to six boards and three steals.

San Fernando's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Omar Chavez led the charge by putting up 31 points. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Chavez has scored at least a third of San Fernando's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaiah Cabrera, who had 20 points.

Sylmar's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for San Fernando, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sylmar will face off against Eagle Rock at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for San Fernando, they will challenge Arleta at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. San Fernando knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three matches -- so hopefully Arleta likes a good challenge.
