Pueblo County is a perfect 4-0 against La Junta since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Hornets will head out on the road to take on the Tigers at 4:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Pueblo County has five straight wins, La Junta has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
While Pueblo County's victory against Pueblo East wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Hornets never let the Eagles get on the board and left with a 2-0 win on Tuesday. That's two games straight that the Hornets have won by exactly two runs.
The result came thanks to Cole Barger's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Pueblo County's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Fonzie Maes, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, La Junta fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Lamar on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took an 18-14 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Thunder. Even if the Tigers couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
Calvin Hill made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored three runs while going 3-for-6. The team also got some help courtesy of Keo Fisher, who went 2-for-5 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Pueblo County's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 3.75 runs across that stretch. As for La Junta, their loss dropped their record down to 3-10.
Everything went Pueblo County's way against La Junta in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Pueblo County made off with a 15-5 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
