The Watkins Memorial Warriors will take on the Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Watkins Memorial comes in on three and Mt. Vernon on 18.
Watkins Memorial is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They came out on top against Westerville Central by a score of 6-1.
Paisley Conley was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyliee Trouten, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon got the win against Big Walnut on Friday by a conclusive 9-2. Considering the Yellowjackets have won 16 matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Jocelyn Scarbury was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hailey Rudrick, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Brooke Dovenbarger was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Mt. Vernon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .367 or higher in four consecutive games.
Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 24-2 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Watkins Memorial, their record now sits at 16-10.
Watkins Memorial might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Mt. Vernon in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Warriors avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
