Basketball Recap: Maywood/Hayes Center's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Friday

If Maywood/Hayes Center was riding high fresh off their 70-16 takedown of Medicine Valley last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Maywood/Hayes Center Wolves fell 35-25 to the Decatur Community Red Devils on Friday. The Wolves were red-hot offensively headed into the game (they scored no less than 55 points in the three matchups prior) but the Red Devils' defense proved too tough.

Despite the loss, Maywood/Hayes Center still got an impressive performance from Caylie Softley, who posted eight points in addition to nine rebounds and five steals. Softley is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Karissa Stengel, who had nine points.

Even though they lost, Maywood/Hayes Center smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Decatur Community to victory, but perhaps none more so than Brylee Minnick, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Minnick has scored at least a third of Decatur Community's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jenna Fortin, who posted six points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals.

Maywood/Hayes Center moved to 3-1 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Decatur Community, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-1.

Maywood/Hayes Center didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 44-29 win against Dundy County-Stratton on the 14th. As for Decatur Community, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 51-44 loss against Southwest on the 14th.
