The St. Michael's Horsemen had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 34-18 win over Cathedral. Given St. Michael's' advantage in MaxPreps's football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 30th in New Mexico, while Cathedral is ranked 1056th in Texas), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
St. Michael's can attribute much of their success to Matthias Duran, who rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries. Duran was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 61 yards. Another player making a difference was Soren Annon, who gained 98 total yards and a touchdown.
Even if they lost, Cathedral's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. Leading the way was Emiliano Hernandez and his three sacks.
St. Michael's is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season. As for Cathedral, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 4-5.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Michael's will square off against Santa Fe Indian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Santa Fe Indian comes in on a streak of failing to score more than seven points in their last four games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. Savio has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 123 points over their last three games.
