The Monticello Mustangs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 21 points or more this season. They put the hurt on Waynesboro with a sharp 59-37 win on Wednesday. Given Monticello's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 75th, while Waynesboro is ranked 243rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Monticello got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Samantha Shifflett out in front who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and four steals. The game was Shifflett's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Valerie Swanson was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Monticello and bumps their season record up to 4-1. As for Waynesboro, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monticello and Fluvanna County will face off at 7:30 p.m. on December 15th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. As for Waynesboro, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Harrisonburg at 7:00 p.m. on December 15th.
