The Walsh Jesuit Warriors had to kick off their season on the road on Wednesday, but they showed no ill effects. They took down Padua Franciscan 71-53. That's another feather in the cap for Walsh Jesuit, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Walsh Jesuit can attribute much of their success to Kara Courtad, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 12 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Taylor Angielski, who scored 17 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Despite the loss, Padua Franciscan still got an impressive performance from Sophia Spade, who scored 32 points along with 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Spade scored a full 60.4% of Padua Franciscan's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Ally Tonsing was another key contributor, scoring 6 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
Walsh Jesuit's win bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Padua Franciscan, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 0-2.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Walsh Jesuit will take on Austintown-Fitch at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Austintown-Fitch focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Saturday. As for Padua Franciscan, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Kenston at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
