Bluffton put the finishing touches on their 11th blowout victory of the season on Tuesday. They claimed a resounding 66-25 victory over May River at home. Given Bluffton's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while May River is ranked 117th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Bluffton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Tacoya Heyward, who scored 30 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. Heyward is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ja'laina Mosley, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Hilton Head Island suffered their biggest defeat since December 16, 2023 on Tuesday. Their tough 50-30 defeat to James Island might stick with them for a while. Hilton Head Island was down 41-21 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
The losing side was boosted by Deja Godsun, who scored six points along with five assists and two steals. She hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games.
Bluffton's victory was their 17th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-1. As for Hilton Head Island, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's contest: Bluffton have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 37.9% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Hilton Head Island, though, as they've only made 25.4% of their threes per game this season. Given Bluffton's sizeable advantage in that area, Hilton Head Island will need to find a way to close that gap.
Bluffton strolled past Hilton Head Island in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a score of 56-37. The rematch might be a little tougher for Bluffton since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
